The North Smithfield Heritage Assn (NSHA) announces the start of its 2023 Annual Community Appeal.  Rich Keene, NSHA president, explains that “Virtually all the group’s preservation activities are funded by donations.  We hope that the community continues to support our efforts to preserve North Smithfield’s rich heritage.”

 Funds raised will help complete the interior restoration of the historic Forestdale School, purchase materials to restore and maintain damaged gravestones at historic cemeteries, as well as fund a wide range of free programs and activities.   

Members of the NSHA Board of Directors kicked off the 2023 campaign with personal donations that totaled almost $4K.   “We hope the community follows their lead.  Any amount will help!”

President Biden is north of the border. He arrived in Ottawa, Canada Thursday ahead of Friday's scheduled bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Biden plans to affirm his administration's commitment to the U.S.-Canada partnership.       The National Weather Service has confirmed two tornadoes touched down during storms in Southern California this week. That includes the strongest tornado to impact the Los Angeles metro area in 40 years. An EF1 tornado hit Montebello in Los Angeles County at 110 miles per hour late Wednesday morning, damaging several buildings.       A New York City grand jury did not discuss a case involving whether to indict former President Trump today as originally planned. Reports say the grand jury met, but didn't work on the case. It involves Trump and alleged hush money paid to adult film actress Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 election.       Utah governor Spencer Cox has signed a landmark bill that requires teens get parental permission before joining social media sites. The law signed Thursday will impose a digital curfew, blocking sites for minors past ten-30 p.m. It'll also black out ads for underage accounts, and compel social media companies to allow parents access to their children's profiles.       Walmart is joining the growing list of companies that are announcing layoffs. Reports say the retail giant is cutting hundreds of jobs at five e-commerce fulfillment centers across the country. Walmart says the move is to better prepare for the future needs of customers.       The value of MLB franchises is going up. According to Forbes, average MLB team value increased 12-percent over the past year to two-point-three-two-billion-dollars, with revenue increasing nearly eight-percent to ten-point-three-billion-dollars. The New York Yankees topped the list of teams published by Forbes as the most valuable franchise in the league at more than seven-billion-dollars.
