Message from Town Administrator

Gary Ezovski

The North Smithfield Town Council has continuing concern for residents of the town who are not paying their fair share of taxes for the services they receive by failing to register their motor vehicles in the state with a North Smithfield address.  In response to that concern, we have reviewed state law (RIGL 31-3-2 and 31-7-1) and advertised to make everyone aware of our individual obligation to comply with the applicable state laws.  A few people have stepped forward to comply, but there appear to be many who have still not heard the message.

Over the next few weeks, Tax Assessor Sarah Frew and North Smithfield Police Officer Emanuel Avila will be arranging visits with the managers of our larger housing complexes to ask for assistance in helping us to help residents achieve compliance with the law.   They will be distributing copies of the relevant laws and a form that individuals can submit to avoid being fined in the future.  Our objective in supporting the Town Council's initiative isn't to collect fines.  The interest of everyone involved is to assure that the financial burdens related to town services are shared appropriately by all.

If you live in North Smithfield, your vehicles should be registered in Rhode Island with a North Smithfield address.  If you have a legal reason for maintaining an out of town address on your RI registration or if you have a valid reason for maintaining an out of state plate, you are required to provide an annual report with the Town's Tax Assessor.  That form is available by Clicking HERE,  and Sarah can be reached at 401-767-2200 Ext. 323.  Of course, I also can be reached for any questions by reply to this newsletter or at Ext 303.

North Smithfield Recycling -- We Now Have an App for That.

In an effort to put trash & recycling collection schedules at your fingertips, North Smithfield Recycling has paired with Recycle Coach to offer a free web and mobile app easily added to smartphones or tablets.  Now residents can see the Recycle Department calendar, details of our collection programs, and learn how to become a better recycler quickly and easily anytime they want this information.

The calendar feature displays trash collection days for your specific address and will even update for trash holiday weeks.  This feature will also display our Recycle Center hours, our curbside yard waste season, white goods Saturday dates, and Eco-Depot and other events.

And to make things even easier, you can have Recycle Coach send you reminders.   Get an email or text message for upcoming events or special collections.  It couldn't be simpler.

"We hope with easy information and reminders sent to your phone or directly through emails, residents will understand all the recycling programs we offer and take advantage of them.  More recycling participation means more recycling in NS, and less trash being landfilled from our community.  It's a win all around," explains Donna Kaehler, recycling coordinator.

The Recycle Coach app is free to download and available from ITunes Store and Google Play. Click here for the web app that is linked on the Town of North Smithfield website. For more information, call 767-2200 x345.
