NORTH SMITHFIELD DPW FACILITIES-
STORM CLEANUP

Good afternoon,

The tree damage from the weekend storm has obviously created a large volume of material that must be disposed of.  Our Department of Public Works is planning to help with that by making a dumpster available at the DPW facility.  The yard is open to receive that material today and tomorrow for anyone who wants to beat the snow that will be hitting us Wednesday and Thursday.

Since the focus of DPW work on Wednesday must be to be ready for the snowstorm, we ask that no such material be brought there on Wednesday or Thursday.  DPW will continue to receive material on Friday and Saturday.  If additional dates seem necessary, we will make an appropriate announcement.

Also, though our DPW personnel will not enter any private property to remove trees, or even to collect branches, they are prepared to collect material at the curb line of your home.  You will be making it easy for us to handle your branches if you leave them in long lengths so they can be chipped.  Please contact DPW at 767-2200 extension 348 to make them aware that you have material to pick up.

Again, the snowstorm that is forecast for Wednesday into Thursday will force our focus on keeping roads open, so we will appreciate your understanding of the schedule detailed above.  Safety in the DPW yard is paramount.

President Trump is going to make a major announcement tomorrow afternoon on the situation at the southern border and the shutdown. The President tweeted tonight that he will speak from the White House at 3 p.m. Eastern time. He has said in the past that if negotiations bog down on the shutdown, he would declare a national emergency to give himself the power to divert funds toward building a border wall.       The spokesman for Special Counsel Robert Mueller is disputing a BuzzFeed story regarding supposed statements from President Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen. The report prompted some of the President's critics to call for his impeachment, while some lawmakers promised to investigate the matter. Mueller's spokesperson said the description of relevant statements to the Special Counsel's office aren't accurate.       The markets are reacting positively to news that talks between China and the U.S. are going well toward a trade deal. China suggested buying up to a trillion-dollars more in U.S. goods over the next six years to help even out the trade imbalance.        The white former Chicago police officer who shot a black teen 16 times and killed him will be going to jail for up to six years. A judge sentenced Jason Van Dyke today for the 2014 killing of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.       R. Kelly and his label, Sony Music, are reportedly splitting as the singer faces sexual abuse allegations. The record label has been under mounting pressure to cut ties with Kelly following the release of a TV series called "Surviving R. Kelly." That series airs several allegations of sexual, physical and emotional abuse against the Grammy-winning artist.        The weather is clearing up in Kansas City in time for this weekend's AFC championship game between the Chiefs and the New England Patriots. There were fears the game would be played in bitter cold, but the temperatures are now expected to approach 30 degrees.
