Rep. Morin announces re-election bid
WOONSOCKET — Rep. Michael A. Morin has announced his intention to run for re-election to the District 49 seat in the House of Representatives.
“It has been a distinct pleasure to serve the people of Woonsocket,” said Representative Morin, who has served in the House since 2014. “I look forward to building upon what the Woonsocket delegation has accomplished, especially phasing out the car tax, reducing the minimum corporate tax and restoring the Ethics Commission’s jurisdiction over the General Assembly.”
A strong advocate of government reform, Morin introduced campaign finance reform legislation this year to tighten the requirements of public officials for campaign contribution and expenditure reporting. He also sponsored legislation urging Gov. Gina Raimondo to designate several communities in the Blackstone Valley as Qualified Opportunity Zones, taking advantage of the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 to encourage long-term investments in low-income urban and rural communities nationwide. That designation became official early in June.
In 2017, he sponsored a child-protection law that prohibits upholstered children's products that contain certain amounts of bromide or chlorine bonded to carbon that is added to a plastic, foam, or textile. For these efforts, he was named an environmental champion by Clean Water Action Rhode Island. He also successfully sponsored legislation that creates a veteran's preference in the issuance of state contracts.
In the 2016 session, he introduced legislation to assist Rhode Island’s growing brewery and distillery industries and to encourage an increasingly popular segment of the tourism industry. The law allows breweries and distilleries to sell limited amounts of their products to visitors for sampling and off-site consumption
In his first term, he sponsored a law to attract large-scale theatrical tours and productions to the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket by expanding the state’s musical and theatrical production tax credit program to include venues of its size.
In 2015, he sponsored successful legislation aimed at encouraging music education in all public high schools, and cosponsored a law that increased the penalties for sex trafficking of a minor.
Morin is a captain in the Woonsocket Fire Department and serves as assistant deputy state fire marshal. He has been employed by the fire department for over 30 years and is the former president of the Woonsocket Firefighters, Local 732. He is a member of the Woonsocket Rotary Club and is on the Board of Directors for the Stadium Theatre.
He is a 1983 graduate of Woonsocket High School and holds a degree in fire sciences from the Community College of Rhode Island.
A resident of 180 Allen St., Representative Morin has lived in Woonsocket for more than 47 years. Born on December 1, 1965, he is the youngest of seven children of Ann Marie (Danis) Morin and the late George Morin, the former principal of Woonsocket High School.
The Supreme Court will hear arguments Thursday on Donald Trump's claim he has absolute immunity on charges of attempting to overturn the 2020 election. The outcome could determine whether Trump faces a federal trial this year on four felony counts brought by special counsel Jack Smith, which include conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and obstruction of an official proceeding. Trump's legal team argues the former president should have absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for any official acts taken while in office.
