It has been a challenging week. One of the many, many, people who contacted town hall this week said he was looking forward to this newsletter for my comments on the town council action. I have had many thoughts. But, given the rancor that erupted this week, what can I say that won’t be taken to unintended places? I also try to keep this newsletter focused on information rather than opinion or advertising, but to the extent that I am this town’s elected leader, I feel compelled to comment today.
Our society has many challenges that we must find ways to address. National leaders and our congressional representatives have yet to find a way forward on some very important issues. So, who among us will be the person who presents an acceptable path? Who will find the right question or message that encourages assembly rather than division? Obviously, it did not go well for all of us when one of our own tried to offer what I think was actually a message about injustice. One wise person said to me, wrong issue, wrong town, wrong individual, at the wrong time. Looking back, it is easy to say the wise man is right. But the issues don’t go away. Injustice to anyone is wrong. Racial prejudice is wrong. I have no doubt that the supermajority of our town and indeed the country knows that. But there still is injustice and there still is prejudice. Eliminating injustice and prejudice will take bold leadership by honorable people who are willing to speak and people will hear. Have they all gone “over the hill with Abraham, Martin, and John”. When or where is that right individual, town, and time?

Congratulations and thank you to Chairwoman Liz Featherston and all the PumpkinFest volunteers. The assembly of food, crafts, games, and attractions was bigger than ever. Thanks to those who sponsor for continuing to believe these gatherings for families and friends are worthy of their financial support. From the giant flag and the hot air balloon rides to all those Goodwin pumpkins, painted children’s faces, and the four policeman in the wrecking ball, it was a great day. Thanks also to our EMA team, NSPD, NSFD, DPW and school department personnel for making sure every process was orderly and all were safe, especially with the crunch we feel in parking.
In the process, the NSFD and my office also handed out a few hundred File of Life refrigerator magnets to help make important health information available in the event of an EMS response, especially for our senior population. We still have them available for free at the fire stations and town hall for anyone who forgot to stop by.

TO ALL OUR RESIDENTS:
This is a reminder that though we do not have a particular storm in view, June 1st to November 30th is Hurricane season, and we need to stay prepared. The attached link has a list of things to consider before and after a Hurricane.

NOTICE OF VOTER REGISTRATION
The Town Clerk’s office located at 575 Smithfield Road is open the following hours to receive new voter registrations and to correct names and addresses of registered voters:
Mon. thru Wed. 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
Thurs. 8:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Fri. 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
For those residents who are not already registered to vote, the last date to register to be eligible to vote in the General Election scheduled for November 6, 2018 is:
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2018 FROM 1:00 P.M. TO 4:00 P.M.
Voter registration forms will be made available in the lobby of the North Smithfield Police Station, 575 Smithfield Road.
Mail Ballot Applications are available and must be returned to the Town Clerk’s office no later than 4:00 P.M. on October 16, 2018.

The Town of North Smithfield has hired Northeast Revaluation Group LLC to conduct a statistical update to bring all real estate in town to fair market value effective December 31, 2018 for the July 2019 tax roll. The process is mandatory according to RIGL 44-5-11.6. The law requires these statistical updates every 3 years and a full revaluation every 9 years.
Throughout the project Northeast Revaluation’s staff will be in neighborhoods throughout the town. The company will attempt to physically visit, measure and inspect properties that sold over the last 2 years, which helps in the analysis of determining fair market value. They also will be visiting any properties that have unfinished construction or have taken out building permits recently. All employees are required to carry identification and have their vehicles on file with the assessor’s office and police department. The process will last over the next several months and be completed in the spring of 2019. TOUR OUR TOWN'S 60 HISTORIC CEMETERIES
Our next tour is scheduled for Saturday, September 22 at 9:00 am. We will tour five more cemeteries in the vicinity of Mattity Rd and Nipsachuck Estates: NS41 Mowry-Sayles, NS18 Sterry-Young, NS 53 George Arnold, NS59 Colwell, NS50 Unknown. We will meet in the Union Cemetery on Smithfield Rd at the gate nearest Greenville Rd. Those who live closer to Douglas Pike can meet us at 9:15 in front of Nipsachuck estates mailboxes at the intersection of Indigo Farm Rd and Log Rd. Wear long pants and comfortable walking shoes. The Supreme Court will hear arguments Thursday on Donald Trump's claim he has absolute immunity on charges of attempting to overturn the 2020 election. The outcome could determine whether Trump faces a federal trial this year on four felony counts brought by special counsel Jack Smith, which include conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and obstruction of an official proceeding. Trump's legal team argues the former president should have absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for any official acts taken while in office.
