Today, my newsletter message is short and simple.

 

First, please take time to view the North Smithfield High School video that is in today’s message from School Superintendent St. Jean in the first post below. The photos from graduation are a wonderful remembrance of another fine class.  But please take the time to see the video which speaks volumes of why North Smithfield High is respected as one of ours state’s best education opportunities.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NORTH SMITHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2019

 

Message from School Superintendent, Michael St. Jean: It is an honor and privilege to share with you a short video and photo albums of our 2019 High School Graduates. They leave us with NSHS ranked as one of the top five public high schools in the State. These 104 NSHS graduates earned approximately 1.2 million dollars in scholarship money for the colleges and universities they will attend this fall, once again showing the value of a North Smithfield education.

Make A Plan Today!

Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area. Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated. Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find.

 

Step 1: Put together a plan by discussing these 4 questions with your family, friends, or household to start your emergency plan.

  1. How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings? Do you have NIXLE and CODE RED?
  2. What is my shelter plan? In place shelter or our community shelter (do you know where it is?).
  3. What is my evacuation route? We have a map on our website (www. nsema.org)
  4. What is my family/household communication plan? Is it verbal, printed or on your computer or tablet.

 

Step 2: Consider specific needs in your household.

As you prepare your plan tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities. Discuss your needs and responsibilities and how people in the network can assist each other with communication, care of children, business, pets, or specific needs like the operation of durable medical equipment. Create your own personal network for specific areas where you need assistance. Keep in mind some these factors when developing your plan:

  • Different ages of members within your household
  • Responsibilities for assisting others
  • Locations frequented
  • Dietary needs
  • Medical needs including prescriptions and equipment
  • Disabilities or access and functional needs including devices and equipment
  • Languages spoken
  • Cultural and religious considerations
  • Pets or service animals (we have a pet plan on the town website) (one for farm animals too)
  • Households with school-aged children

 

Step 3: Fill out a Family Emergency Plan

Download and fill out a family emergency plan or use them as a guide to create your own.

 

Step 4: Practice your plan with your family/household bi-yearly or yearly.

      There is a saying "Practice Makes Perfect"

WHAT IS IN YOUR PET PREPAREDNESS KIT?

 

In honor of National Pet Preparedness Month, North Smithfield Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Northern RI REACT and North Smithfield CERT is encouraging area residents who are pet owners to create an emergency preparedness kit for their pets to ensure complete family readiness during an emergency or disaster.

“Emergencies and disasters come in many forms and could require you to leave your home for an undetermined amount of time,” said Colonel Peter E. Branconnier, director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

“Remember, if it isn’t safe for you, it isn’t safe for your pets, so it’s important to include your pets in your readiness plan.”

To create a pet preparedness kit, ensure the following items are readily available in a safe location:

•   Pet food, water and bowls 

•   Pet carrier, leash and collar

•   Photo of your pet or ID and a photo of you with your pet

•   Immunization, veterinary records and pet medications

•   First Aid Kit

•   Contact list of pet-friendly hotels, veterinarians, and out-of-town friends and family

•   Toys, rope and sanitation bags

Senior Services, Inc. has provided services to seniors and adults with disabilities residing in Northern Rhode Island since 1975, in accordance with the Congregate Meal Program financed through a grant with R.I. Department of Elderly Affairs. Senior Services, Inc. provides nutritionally balanced lunches five days a week at our meal sites throughout Northern R.I.

Senior Services, Inc. offers activities, entertainment, computer classes, Alzheimer's Disease Support Groups, and Wellness programs, which include a weekly blood pressure clinic and exercise classes.

 

Senior Services, Inc. also offers an Adult Day Care Program ("A Home for the Day"), and a Community Information Specialist who can provide information on eligibility for all state and local programs, including RIPAE.

Jury selection will continue tomorrow in Donald Trump's historic hush money trial. During the process, reports say the former President smiled at a group of potential jurors when the judge referred to him as "defendant." Trump is accused of falsifying business records to cover payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.        Anti-Israel protests took place on interstates, roads, and bridges in cities across the U.S. today. They converged on New York's Brooklyn Bridge and clashed with police. Meanwhile on the West Coast, they completely blocked southbound traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge.        "Rust" armorer Hannah Gutierrez is set to be sentenced today. Gutierrez faces 18 months in prison for negligence in loading the live ammo into Alec Baldwin's gun on set, causing the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin has also been charged with involuntary manslaughter in Hutchins' death, and is scheduled to head to trial in July.       It's crunch time for taxpayers and the IRS is making it easier for some last minute-filers ahead of tonight's deadline. The agency released an update for Direct File, its free tax filing program. The update allows taxpayers in a dozen states to import the previous year's information from the IRS in order to easily validate the current year's return.       Record labels have come to an agreement with the Screen Actors Guild on protections for artists from the use of AI. SAG-AFTRA announced Friday that the agreement with major labels follows protections the union and the Writers Guild of America reached with production studios last year after their respective strikes. They included landmark protections around using artificial intelligence as the evolving technology poses increasing threats to the creative workforce.        The Indiana Fever have selected Caitlin Clark with the number one pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. The former Iowa guard set numerous records during her career with the Hawkeyes. In her senior season, Clark became the all-time NCAA Division One men's and women's scoring leader.
